Dykeland Lodge challenges the concept of long-term care to address the evolving needs within the sector, while creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for residents, families, and visitors.
Bird Construction along with Nycum + Associates and Dykeland Lodge were inspired by Danish design principles and wanted to develop a flexible model of long-term care. The objective was to move away from the traditional institutional aesthetic that we often see in long-term care facilities by creating a facility that felt connected to its surrounding community and natural landscape. The building exterior played an important role in achieving this vision.
Dykeland Lodge needed a durable and low-maintenance cladding solution that complimented the residential character in the design plan, while also providing visual continuity across this large-scale institutional building.
Bellara Lap Siding was selected to create a warm, residential-inspired exterior while delivering the quality and durability required for a long-term care environment.
The horizontal lap-style profile provides the familiarity and comfort of a residential home which helps soften the scale of the facility for residents, creating a more approachable and welcoming first impression. The seamlessness of the cladding exterior compliments the Danish-inspired design influence while creating a cohesive yet architectural appearance.
Dykeland Lodge worked with the landscape of the site to create a natural transition between the building and its environment. This allowed for a residential feel, instead of an isolated institutional building.
The building exterior provides a balance of function, residential character, durability, and modern building architecture while supporting Dykeland Lodge’s vision to design a community around its residentials, staff, and visitors.
Dykeland Lodge (Opening 2026) is designed to give residents and future residents who require long-term care in the West Hants municipality a connected community that supports residents, families, staff, and the surrounding community.
By combining thoughtful architecture with residential inspired exterior, Bellara Lap Siding demonstrates how the selection of material can contribute to a welcoming, inviting, and dignified approach to long-term care.
