This client needed a compact, functional laneway home and garage solution that could fit within Toronto’s existing zoning requirements while working within a limited budget. The design also needed to maximize the limited site while transforming the existing rundown garage into a modern, durable, and sophisticated living space.
The design team selected Vicwest’s 7/8” Corrugated profile for both the roof and walls, creating a continuous, unified exterior with a simple material palette (https://www.azuremagazine.com/article/a-little-blue-house-meets-a-toronto-laneway/).
The corrugated steel delivers a combination of durability and visual uniqueness while having the versatility to cover both roof and wall applications, helping simplify the design of the home overall. The bold blue finish on the steel established a distinctive architectural statement, inspired by the homeowner’s art collection and complemented by the industrial character of the laneway. The cost-effectiveness and colour options supported both the project’s practical and aesthetic goals.
The Little Blue House demonstrates how compact laneway housing can transform underutilized urban space in established Toronto neighbourhoods into more attainable forms of functional housing through thoughtful design, durable materials, and cost-conscious construction.
